New build snagging survey in Yeovil

New build snagging surveys across Yeovil's continuing development on the western edge, one of the drier and more sheltered towns in this coverage area.

Growth on the western edge of a manufacturing town

Yeovil grew as a manufacturing town on the Yeo, in south Somerset's hamstone country, and its housing stock reflects that industrial history: Victorian glove-industry terraces, very extensive post-war estates and aviation industry housing built for the workforce at what is now Yeovilton. Continuing modern development sits specifically on the town's western edge, the newest layer on top of that industrial-era growth.

Somerset planning policy in towns like this often asks new development to reference the local hamstone character in reconstituted stone panels or detailing on street-facing elevations, even where the underlying construction is standard modern build-up, which is worth knowing when comparing what a plot looks like from the road to what the roof and upper walls are actually built from.

Drier than most, but not immune

Yeovil is inland and among the drier and more sheltered places in this dataset, which sounds like good news for a new roof, and mostly is. The open ridge of Summerhouse Hill to the south does still catch the wind, though, and a lower average rainfall does not mean zero risk of the kind of ridge or verge failure that shows up anywhere fixings have not been finished to specification.

If anything, a generally sheltered climate can work against a buyer here: a marginal defect that would announce itself quickly in a wetter, windier town might sit quietly for longer in Yeovil's calmer conditions, simply because it is being tested less often.

Checking the reference detailing as well as the roof

Where a new elevation carries reconstituted stone detailing meant to echo the town's hamstone character, that detailing is worth including in the survey alongside the roof itself: a panel that has not been properly fixed or sealed at its edges is its own kind of defect, distinct from anything happening on the roof above it.

A manufacturing town's edges

Yeovil's postcode area runs BA20 to BA22. Yeovil Country Park and Ninesprings sit close to the centre, with the Fleet Air Arm Museum out at Yeovilton marking the aviation industry heritage behind much of the town's post-war housing, useful context for a town whose newest growth on the western edge continues that same pattern of building for a specific local workforce.

Sherborne, Chard, Dorchester and Taunton, all covered elsewhere on this site, sit within reach across south Somerset and into Dorset, and while Sherborne in particular shares Yeovil's hamstone building tradition, its own weather and terrain notes are specific enough to be worth checking on its own page rather than assumed identical.

Behind the survey

What Yeovil clients are actually buying

CAA registered

Operator ID and Flyer ID held, plus the A2 Certificate of Competency. The paperwork goes over with the quote, ready for a site manager's file if one is needed before access is agreed.

100 megapixel camera

A DJI Mavic 4 Pro with a Hasselblad camera and 6K video. The resolution is what lets a single frame be cropped into a mortar joint on a ridge tile or a hairline crack in fresh render without the image falling apart.

Radiometric thermal

A DJI Mavic 2 Enterprise Advanced carrying a 640 by 512 thermal camera. Used where a flat roof section may be holding water under the membrane, which shows as a temperature difference well before it shows as a stain on a ceiling below.

Insured with Coverdrone

Full commercial cover for the operation. A certificate goes to a site manager, a warranty provider or a snagging company as a matter of course, without anyone having to chase for it.
